Over the last twenty years, there has been a revolution in science. Scientists have, at last, found ways, scientific ways, of understanding a raft of phenomena that we now call complex adaptive systems. Whether they are brains or ecosystems, economies or societies, immune systems, human organisations or ant colonies, science has found that they all share features - evolvability, adaptability, emergence, novelty, feedback, individuality and nonlinearity for example - that allow them to be analysed, for the first time, in a comprehensive way.
Until very recently, this new science of complexity was both too inaccessible and too tentative for it to be applied to the practical problems of business and government. However it is now mature and robust enough for it to be used in a pragmatic way on the complex strategic problems of the enterprise.
Tjurunga was founded in January 2001 to bring the fruits of this profound, ongoing revolution in science to the pragmatic concerns of business and government. We offer a unique interface between these worlds: as scientists we have many years of active research at the cutting edge of the science of complexity, and we have been advisors at the highest levels to business and government. We understand the concerns and needs of the enterprise as well as we understand the new science of complexity.
Tjurunga is headed by Dr Roger Bradbury, a former chief science advisor in the Australian government, and Bohdan Durnota, a computer scientist with an international reputation in modelling complex systems.
Roger Bradbury is a complex systems scientist with an international reputation in advanced modelling and analysis. Until recently, he was the Chief Scientist in Australia's Bureau of Rural Sciences within the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, providing scientific advice to Ministers and senior policy makers on a wide range of sustainable development issues. Roger holds several academic appointments - he is a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies at the Australian National University, an Adjunct Professor in Zoology at the University of Queensland, and a Principal Fellow in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne.
Bohdan Durnota is a computer scientist with an international reputation in modelling complex systems. Currently he has a number of consultancies in applying complex systems techniques to strategic business issues, including in government departments. He also has current and past consulting experience in technology management/systems engineering and visioning skills in the financial services and e-Business sectors. Bohdan is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Monash University. Until recently, he also was an active member of the OMG - the premier international standards body in the IT field.
Tjurunga has offices in Canberra and Melbourne.
